Original burgundy boards, with a caricature of an octopus strangling the world to the front cover, and death embracing the world to t…he rear panel. The book is in sound condition but with a little rubbing and marking to the covers. Very small area of loss to the top edge of the spine. Internally clean and tidy throughout, but with moderate darkening to the edges. 22 pages. There were also editions printed in English at the same time. 32cm x 24cm. Introduction to the first few pages in German. .

With 32 large color plates, all using one or two colors besides black and white. The captions poke light fun at the Prussian, and German, military and militarism, as well as the common attitudes of the… ranks and file at the time. Much of the humor is now somewhat obscure, which is part of its academic fascination. The drawings, regardless, capture the time and spirit of the German army and navy of the period when it was at the height of its prestige. The cover has light soiling and wear. The original endpapers have edge chips and a closed tear along the front hinge. The contents are quite clean.
