Verfolgt man aber die Tradierung des Ketzergedankens nicht ausschließlich unter kirchen- und dogmengeschichtlichen Perspektiven, sondern im Hinblick auf die aufklärerische individuelle Freiheits- und Emanzipationsentfaltung, ließen sich gewichtige Gründe für die gewählte Zäsur aufführen. Es bedürfte vielleicht nicht einmal der Autorität Paul Hazards, der in La crise de la conscience européenne eben die Zeitspanne von 1680 bis 1715 als Umschwungsphase der geistigen Kultur des Abendlandes überzeugend nachgewiesen hat. Denn daß die europäische Aufklärung ohne die religionskritischen Impulse, die wiederum starke Wurzeln in der pietistischen Mystik haben, nicht hinlänglich gedeutet werden kann, wird auch von der anthropologischen und soziologischen Forschung kaum mehr bestritten. Unter dem Gesichtspunkt dieses Traditionszusammenhanges wird demgegenüber die Bedeutung Gottfried Arnolds immer noch unterschätzt, auf dessen Unparteiische Kirchen- und Ketzerhistorie aus dem Jahre 1699 die in dieser Arbeit unternommene Entwicklung eines geistigen Leitfadens vom Pietismus bis in die Postmoderne aufgebaut werden soll. Der in der Pietismus-Forschung hinsichtlich des Einflusses von Arnold vielfach kritisch angemerkten Vermischung von Geistesbewegungen durch Beziehungen zu den englischen Deisten, zu Pierre Bayle usw. kann entgegengehalten werden, daß Arnolds Ketzertypologie, wie gezeigt werden wird, bahnbrechender und radikaler die Strukturelemente des Häretischen für eine positive Bewertung dieser Denk- und Lebensart produktiv gemacht hat.
