Kmen was a bookstore central to Czech modernist and avant-garde activity, an outlet and meeting ground for artists and intelligentsia. The Almanach Kmene was an annual summary of the editors' picks in literature, music, drama and the visual arts, both local and international. It was especially extensive as a chronicle of the photography, art and design developing in the First Republic of Czechoslovakia and is replete with images, drawings, photos, portraits, page design and typography carrying the spirit of the era. The Kmen bookstore soon branched into a readers' club which served as an outlet for new thinking in philosophy and politics as well as art and culture. Both bookstore and club were closed by the German occupation and opened briefly after the war, only to suffer the same fate imposed by the communist régime which took power in 1948. This full set includes the extra numbers published in the late winter and spring which appeared for a few years. Condition very good+ to fine; some years uncut.
