Dans l'épigramme comme dans la satire, dans l'apologie comme dans l'épître philosophique, qui peut nier que la matière ne soit la même, et que le cadre seul diffère. De même, par combien de points l'élégie ne touche-t-elle pas à la poésie érotique, l'ode amoureuse à ces deux genres, l'ode religieuse et historique aux poèmes tels que ceux de Catulle ? On peut appliquer à ce vaste recueil, ce que Juvénal dit du sien : « tout ce que font les hommes, voeux, crainte, colère, volupté, joie, intrigues, voilà la matière de mon livre ». Nisard est aujourd'hui tout à fait oublié mais il eut son moment de gloire pendant le second empire, car, professeur d'éloquence française à la Faculté des lettres de Paris de 1852 à 1867, ce fut dans une de ses leçons qu'il exposa sa théorie des « deux morales », qui resta attachée à son nom. Il distingua la morale ordinaire, qui régit les actions des simples particuliers, et celle, plus large, applicable seulement aux princes, qui peuvent violer leurs serments, emprunter des millions sans les rendre, etc. Le chahut qui s'ensuivit trouva sa conclusion en correctionnelle, où plusieurs étudiants furent condamnés à de la prison, transformant une explosion de potaches en événement politique, et popularisant son sobriquet d'« homme aux deux morales ». Indispensable à tout latiniste qui se respecte.
