In dit boek worden de resultaten beschreven van een empirisch onderzoek naar de communes in ons land. Dankzij moeizaam speuren - moeizaam omdat de meeste communes een min oi meer verborgen bestaan leiden - kon met vele ervan contact worden opgenomen. Dit is dan ook het eerste boek over Nederlandse communes, dat gebaseerd is op wetenschappelijk onderzoek van vele jaren. Van Ussel en zijn medewerkers konden 52 communes bewegen aan het onderzoek mee te werken. Zij verzamelden bij 300 leden van deze communes een groot aantal gegevens ter beantwoording van vragen als: wat zijn dat voor mensen, waarom leven ze in een commune, hoe leven ze daar, zijn ze tevreden, hoe lang blijven ze bij elkaar, hoe staat het met de kinderen. De kernvraag was: is de commune als model van intieme relatievorming, een reëel alternatief voor huwelijk en gezin? Het verslag van dit onderzoek wordt voorafgegaan door een cultuurhistorische beschouwing, waarin Van Ussel een algemeen kader geeft. Hij besteedt vooral aandacht aan de vervreemding en vereenzaming, die het lot zijn van zovelen in onze tijd. De commune wordt zo gezien als een samenlevingsvorm, die poogt iets van deze vervreemding en vereenzaming te doorbreken. In het eerste deel tonen we het ontstaan en de gevolgen van het kijken door een 'seksuele' bril. We trachten aan te tonen dat een geseksu…aliseerde visie minder bruikbaar is. Onze opvattingen illustreren we met twee voorbeelden, die van de relaties man - man of vrouw - vrouw en het fenomeen man - vrouw. Na deze vrij gemakkelijke kritiek werken we in een tweede deel een tegenvoorstel uit, nl. enkele algemene lijnen van een alternatieve visie. Die kijkt vooral naar de wijze waarop mensen met elkaar omgaan, hun bedoelingen, de inhoud van de contacten en de mogelijkheden om tot liefde te komen. Over het ontstaan van de behoefte tot liefhebben en over de individuele verschillen en overeenkomsten tussen partners, zal weinig of niets gezegd worden. Op twee dingen wordt dieper in-gegaan. In eerste instantie de uitwendige factoren die het ontstaan van verschillende liefdesmodellen, onder meer het westerse model, beïnvloeden. Voorts wordt nagegaan op welke voorwaarden een relatie erotisch genoemd kan worden, dit om een verschil met niet-liefdesrelaties te laten zien. Wat komt er in de plaats van de 'seksualiteit'? Een nieuwe term, intimiteit of innigheid. Deze term lijkt sentimenteel en vaag. Ze zou ook uit de veldtheorie van K. Lewin (1945) kunnen komen. Over onze beschouwingen i.v.m. de liefde kan gezegd worden dat ze te mooi zijn om waar te zijn. Ze zijn niet meer dan een richtsnoer om klaarder te denken, en geen maatstaf om te veroordelen. We voeren geen nieuw ideaalbeeld in dat men moet nastreven. Er zou wel iets bereikt kunnen worden wanneer men meer aandacht besteedde aan de machtsfactoren, want daar draait het meestal om, ook wanneer mensen intiem met elkaar omgaan.
