Per la sua tesi di baccalaureato in teologia, l'excellentissimus philosophorum monarcha (come era chiamato a Padova, roccaforte dell'averroismo), l'augustiniano Paolo Veneto, decise di riassumere l'insegnamento che il compatriota Giovanni di Ripa aveva tenuto a Parigi negli anni 1354-1355, commentando il primo libro delle Sentenze di Pietro Lombardo. I criteri che guidano il riassunto lasciano indovinare il progetto, realizzato ricorrendo principalmente ai testi di Aristotele e Averroè, di sottolineare con evidenza una delle idee portanti del Commento: se le autorità della Scrittura sono semplicemente credute, il loro studio non può generare alcun habitus evidente e scientifico, ma le cose possono andare diversamente se esse dispongono o invitano a speculare scientificamente su ciò che si crede; trattandosi di verità evidenti, grazie alla speculazione o a segni soprannaturali che attestino l'evidenza della loro verità, dal loro studio può nascere un habitus scientifico, che si definirà come 'teologia naturale'. Solida legatura del tempo in piena pergamena semi-floscia abilmente rimontata. Carattere gotico corsivo e testo disposto su due colonne. Nota di possesso manoscritta da mano coeva nella parte sup. della carta a1 "Antoninus clar(issimus) mons Florensis". Capolettera ornati in xilografia. Alla c. a3(v), un' illustrazione xilografica a p.p. rappresenta la "figura de in esse", centrale nella sillogistica aristotelica scolastica, in calce un' annotazione su due righe manoscritta da mano cinquecentesca "Omne necessariat, impossibile quasi nullum, possibile quidam non, possibile non". Glosse manoscritte da mano coeva. Un paio di piccole gore agli angoli interni delle prime 4 cc., peraltro esemplare in stato di conservazione molto buono. Rara edizione di questo che è il più famoso trattato di logica del XV secolo, noto anche come logica parva, opera del filosofo realista veneziano Paolo Veneto, una figura di spicco della tarda scolastica. Il suo "Tractatus", uno dei primissimi libri di logica a stampa, fu probabilmente prodotto come libro di testo ad uso dell' Università di Padova, dove Paolo Veneto aveva insegnato all' inizio del Quattrocento, poi ampiamente utilizzato nelle università tardomedievali e rinascimentali, rimanendo centrale nei programmi accademici di logica fino al XVI secolo inoltrato. Lo stesso Paolo di Venezia aveva studiato a Oxford e Padova prima di essere nominato ambasciatore veneziano in Polonia. Al suo ritorno in Italia, insegnò nelle nascenti università di Bologna e Siena, e introdusse i suoi studenti alla critica dei pensatori inglesi Guglielmo di Ockham, Giovanni Buridano e Marsilio di Inghen. Sviluppò le idee di Duns Scoto e John Wycliffe. Il ruolo del suo allievo Paolo della Pergola, futuro professore alla Scuola di Rialto, che lo aiutò nella stesura del "Tractatus", fu cruciale nella diffusione degli insegnamenti della scuola di Oxford in Italia, influenzando lo sviluppo della scienza e della filosofia durante tutto il Rinascimento.
