******************* ref.

Leo Africanus (al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Wazzân) "Historiale description de l'Afrique, tierce partie du monde." -Translated into French by Jean Temporal -Published in Lyon by Jean Temporal - 1556 -Folio (33.5 × 22 cm). Two volumes bound in 1. -Collation: [20], 495 (actually 499), [12]; [10], 160; [8], 307, 64 (of 70) pp. Lacking six pages at the end. -Double page map of Africa in duplicate (as called for) -Bound in restored contemporary gilt French calf binding. -Condition: Some browning, foxing and stains. light waterstaining to the end of one volume. Several costume woodcuts with contemporary pen marks and manuscript marginalia in places. Occasional worming and tears. Overall very good. The first French edition of Leo Africanus' celebrated description of Africa in (restored) contemporary bindings. This monumental collection is the first major collection of voyages printed in France with illustrations. The translation is based on Ramusio's Primo volume delle navigationi which was first published in Venice in 1550. Alongside it's description of Africa by various authors (including Leo Africanus) it also includes important descriptions of Arabia, Persia, Goa, Calicut, Ceylon, and Asia. Volume one includes eight landmark voyages spanning antiquity to the Renaissance. It opens with Hanno the Carthaginian s account of early African exploration, followed by a Portuguese pilot s practical navigation. At its heart lies Leo Africanus' celebrated Description of Africa in nine books the most influential early ethnography of the continent. Alongside are the Venetian Alvise da Cadamosto's pioneering voyages to West Africa, including further reports on the land of the Blacks, and the related account of Pierre de Sintré. A Portuguese pilot's navigation from Lisbon to São Tomé illustrates the growth of the Gulf of Guinea trade, while the collection closes with Amerigo Vespucci s famous letters to Piero Soderini, which fixed the name America in European consciousness. The second volume brings together some of the most important Portuguese and Italian testimonies of discovery and encounter. It opens with the voyages of Vasco da Gama, Pedro Alvares Cabral, Thomas Lopes, and Giovanni da Empoli accounts central to the opening of the sea route to India and the mapping of Brazil. These are followed by Ludovico de Varthema of Bologna s celebrated travels, the earliest detailed European account of Arabia, Egypt, and India. From antiquity is included the rare voyage of Iamboulos, the Greek merchant, with its curious ethnographic descriptions. The Florentine Andrea Corsali's letters, sent from Cochin, describe India, Madagascar, and the early Portuguese presence in the East. The correspondence of Queen Helena of Ethiopia with King Manuel of Portugal provides a striking African voice within the collection. Part two of the second volume is devoted to Ethiopia, led by Francisco Alvares s invaluable description of his 1520 27 mission to Prester John, accompanied by royal Ethiopian letters to Pope Clement VII and the kings of Portugal. The volume closes with an important discourse on the Nile by Giovanni Battista Ramusio, paired with a learned response by Girolamo Fracastoro. The volumes are illustrated with two repeated woodcut title-borders, a printer's device, two double-page woodcut maps, and 36 mostly large in-text woodcuts, including striking depictions of costume. The great double-printed map of Africa in south projection is present in both volumes (as required), together with a full-page map of North and Central Africa with the Nile reaching its conjectured sources.

A very good copy, the map in good dark impression, in handsome contemporary calf, covers bordered with a triple blind rule, spine with blind hatched raised bands, blind ruled in compartments, well rebacked and laid down, holes for ties, a.e.r. The first English edition, translated by John Pory, of this seminal classic of African topography and ethnography. Leo Africanus, travelling in the early C16, recorded in detail the life of many remote North African kingdoms. He was born in Granada, in the 1490s moved to Fez in Morocco where Leo served the Sultan who sent him on commercial and diplomatic missions across northern and western Africa. In 1518 he was returning from Istanbul and was captured and took to Rome. There, under the patronage of Pope Leo IX he composed the present work, first published in Italian in 1550. It was a bestseller and one of Europe's principal sources of knowledge of the Arab-African world for the next 400 years."It was translated into English in 1600 by John Pory. Pory's letter 'To the Reader' tells the fascinating story of Leo's life a tale of complex interaction between Europe and Africa, Islam and Christianity This book was important in that it was written by a Moorish man and well regarded by scholars. However Pory is aware that some readers at this time might distrust the writings of a 'More' and a 'Mahumetan' (or Muslim), and he reassures them of Leo's sophistication: his 'Parentage, Witte, Education, Learning, Emploiments, Travels, and his conversion to Christianitie'." (BL). It is likely that Shakespeare was influenced by this work in his portrayal of Othello. "Pory's account of Leo's marvellous escape from 'so manie thousands of imminent dangers' might remind us of Othello's tale of 'hair-breadth escapes i' th' immanent deadly breach'. Like Leo, Othello tells of being 'sold to slavery' and we later learn that Othello was also a former Muslim, now baptised as a Christian. In his description of African people, Leo takes pains to give a balanced perspective, though it seems nonetheless stereotyped and prejudiced. Celebrating their 'vertues', he says Africans are 'Most honest people destitute of fraud and guile'. But 'no nation in the world is so subject to jealousie' (p. 40). In the unpleasant description of their 'vices', he says they are 'very proud and high-minded, and woonderfully addicted unto wrath'. They are also 'so credulous that they beleeve matters impossible which are told to them' (p. 41) and promiscuous in wooing 'divers maides' before settling on a wife (pp.4142). It is hard not see these qualities reflected in Shakespeare's Othello, at least as Iago describes him. Exploiting the stereotypes that define the Moor in Venice, Iago talks of the 'free and open nature' that makes Othello think 'men honest' when they only 'seem so'. He tells Roderigo he suspects 'the lusty Moor' of sleeping with Emilia, and plans to 'put him into jealousy so strong' that his anger will cloud his judgement. Pory's English translation (1600) was printed in the same year as the Moroccan ambassador's visit to London to negotiate a military alliance between English and African forces, with the hope of conquering Spain. In his letter to Sir Robert Cecil, Elizabeth I's secretary, Pory exploits this opportunity to market the book as particularly current, saying 'At this time especially I thought [it] would proove the more acceptable'. Aggiungi al carrelloFolio (305 x 200 mm). Vol. 1 (of 2) only. (40), 495, (23) pp. Wood-engraved title border, double-page woodcut map of Africa, including Arabia, and 26 illustrations, all but one coloured by a contemporary hand. 18th c. mottled calf with giltstamped red label to fully gilt spine. Marbled endpapers. Scarce first French edition of the famous description of Islamic Africa and Arabia, with the illustrations coloured by a contemporary hand; the first collection of voyages printed in France. The book was originally written in Arabic around 1526 by the Berber Andalusi geographer and traveller al-Hasan ibn Muhammad al-Wazzan al-Fasi (ca. 1494-ca. 1554), known in the West as Johannes Leo Africanus, translated into Italian by the author and first published in Venice in 1550. The Arabian Peninsula is depicted nearly complete on the double-page woodcut map and is treated extensively in the first chapter, which contains information on its people, cities, geography, religion, customs, costumes, etc. Illustrations include Arabian camels and veiled women. - Johannes Leo took his Christian name from his sponsor Pope Leo X when he converted to Christianity after his capture in 1520. While still very young he began to travel widely in the Barbary States; in 1513 he appears to have started on his famous Sudan and Sahara journeys (1513-15). In 1516-17 he travelled to Constantinople, probably visiting Egypt on the way; it is more uncertain when he visited Arabias, Armenia and Tartary. His three Egyptian journeys, immediately after the Turkish conquest, all probably fell between 1517 and 1520; on one of these he ascended the Nile from Cairo to Aswan. - Binding somewhat rubbed; spine head and hinges professionally repaired. Repairs to lower margin of first two leaves (very slight loss of title border), some toning and soiling, water- and inkstains. Very occasional marginal tears or worming. Early marginalia and ink ownerships on title page ("Pacauld" and "Ex Bibliotheca Joh. Huyseri", i. e. Johann Huyser). No other auction record of a coloured copy in RBH or ABPC. - Adams L 482.
