An elementary knowledge of quantum mechanics is an essential pre-requisite to undertake this course but no knowledge of group theory is assumed on the part of the readers. Although the subject matter has group-theoretic origin, special efforts have been made to avoid the gro- theoretical language but place emphasis on the algebraic formalism dev- oped by Racah (1942a, 1942b, 1943, 1951). How far I am successful in this project is left to the discerning reader to judge. After the publication of the two classic books, one by Rose and the other by Edmonds on this subject in the year 1957, the application of angular momentum techniques to solve physical problems has become so common that it is found desirable to organize a separate course on this subject to the students of physics. It is to cater to the needs of such students and research workers that this book is written. A large number of questions and problems given at the end of each chapter will enable the reader to have a clearer understanding of the subject.

The occasion for the serious disputations of theories, research findings and c1inical appli cations was the Advanced Study Institute (ASI) under the auspices of the Scientific Affairs Division of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). There was much sharing of mutual experiences, and considerable debate on some issues. There were also friendly exchanges, 'international' ping-pong, tennis matches, and bicyc1e races, and even some convivial ity akin to that of a c1ass reunion with members telling their stories of yesterday and visions of tomorrow. All these serious scientific disputations and the friendly exchanges would not have been possible without the major assistance from NATO and other institutions and individuals. In some domains of research like photochemistry, development has been fast and rather self-supporting. In others, like solid-state processing, progress has been either very specific or deviated towards marginal applications, or else emerged as a joint-venture between physicists and chemists. This yielded a number of professional meetings, where day-to-day research activities are presented. In 1982, the Cargese ASI on 'Cohesive properties of semiconductors under laser irradiation' was one of such meetings at which a prospective of the field was discussed at length in ebullient round-table sessions. Quoted from the proceedings, 'the Institute helped to discern clearly the limits of existing theoretical approaches and the directions along which work is urgently needed within the next few years'. Four years have passed and the field has literally explo ded. It must be mentioned that some of the most striking developments over the past two years were accurately predicted at the Institute in Cargese.

Roughly, model-based diagnosis is the task of finding out the faulty components of a physical system based on the observed behavio…r and the system model. An active system is the abstraction of a physical artefact that is modeled as a network of com municating automata. For example, the protection apparatus of a power transmission network can be conveniently modeled as an active system, where breakers, protection devices, and lines are naturally described by finite state machines. The asynchronous occurrence of a short circuit on a line or a bus-bar causes the reaction of the protection devices, which aims to isolate the shorted line. This reaction can be faulty and several lines might be eventually isolated, rather than the shorted line only. The diagnostic problem to be solved is uncovering the faulty devices based the visible part of the reaction. Once the diagnosis task has been on accomplished, the produced results are exploited to fix the apparatus (and also to localize the short circuit, in this sample case). Interestingly, the research presented in this book was triggered a decade ago by a project 011 short circuit localization, conducted by ENEL, the Italian electricity board, along with other industrial and academic European partners. 464 pp. Englisch.

It has necessitated the development of some important new tools, most notably the model-theoretic treatment of hyperimaginaries (classes modulo type-definable equivalence relations). It thus provides a general notion of independence (and of rank in the supersimple case) applicable to a wide class of algebraic structures. The basic theory of forking independence is developed, and its properties in a simple structure are analyzed. No prior knowledge of stability theory is assumed; in fact many stability-theoretic results follow either from more general propositions, or are developed in side remarks. In value distribution theory, the main problem is that given a holomorphic curve f : C -+ M into a projective variety M of dimension n and a family 01 of hypersurfaces on M, under a proper condition of non-degeneracy on f, find the defect relation. If 01 n is a family of hyperplanes on M = r in general position and if the smallest dimension of linear subspaces containing the image f(C) is k, Cartan conjectured that the bound of defect relation is 2n - k + 1. Various topological aspects of the dynamics of unimodal maps are studied in Chap ter…5. We analyze the distinctive features of the limiting behavior of trajectories of smooth maps. In particular, for some elasses of smooth maps, we establish theorems on the number of sinks and study the problem of existence of wandering intervals. In Chapter 6, for a broad elass of maps, we prove that almost all points (with respect to the Lebesgue measure) are attracted by the same sink. Our attention is mainly focused on the problem of existence of an invariant measure absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. We also study the problem of Lyapunov stability of dynamical systems and determine the measures of repelling and attracting invariant sets. The problem of stability of separate trajectories under perturbations of maps and the problem of structural stability of dynamical systems as a whole are discussed in Chap ter 7. In Chapter 8, we study one-parameter families of maps. We analyze bifurcations of periodic trajectories and properties of the set of bifurcation values of the parameter, in eluding universal properties such as Feigenbaum universality. 276 pp. Englisch.

Inappropriate management of a coastal aquifer may lead to its destruction as a source for freshwater much earlier than other aquifers which are not connected to the sea. The reason is the threat of seawater intrusion. In many coastal aquifers, intrusion of seawater has become one of the major constraints imposed on groundwater utilization. As sea water intrusion progresses, existing pumping wells, especially those close to the coast, become saline and have to be abandoned. Also, the area above the intruding seawater wedge is lost as a source of natural replenishment to the aquifer. Schoenberg (Contribution to the problem of application of equidistant data by analytic functions, Quart. Appl. Math., 4(1946), 45 - 99; 112 - 141) and W. Quade & L. Collatz (Zur Interpo lations theories der reellen periodischen function, Press. Akad. Wiss. (PhysMath. KL), 30(1938), 383- 429) systematically established the the ory of the spline functions. W. Quade & L. Collatz mainly discussed the periodic functions, while I. J. Schoenberg's work was systematic and com plete. I. J. Schoenberg outlined three viewpoints for studing univariate splines: Fourier transformations, truncated polynomials and Taylor ex pansions. Based on the first two viewpoints, I. J. Schoenberg deduced the B-spline function and its basic properties, especially the basis func tions. Many partial results have been re cently unified by means of new formal methods coming from differential geometry and differential algebra. However, certain problems (invariance, equivalence, linearization, etc. ) naturally lead to systems of partial differential equations (PDE). More generally, partial differential control theory studies input/output relations defined by systems of PDE (mechanics, thermodynamics, hydrodynamics, plasma physics, robotics, etc. ). One of the aims of this book is to extend the preceding con cepts to this new situation, where, of course, functional analysis and/or a dynamical system approach cannot be used. A link will be exhibited between this domain of applied mathematics and the famous 'Backlund problem', existing in the study of solitary waves or solitons. The elements of such a theory already exist in the literature and can be found in such pa…pers and monographs as [90,95,96,109,115,131,132,134,135,136,146, 163,165,169,170,182,184,214-218]. In this book, we will employ a theory that is based on quite different principles than those used previously. However, precisely one of the standard principles is left without change, the 'freezing of coefficients' principle. The first main difference in our exposition begins at the point when the 'model problem' appears. Such a model problem for differential equations and differential boundary conditions was first studied in a fundamental paper of V. A. Kondrat'ev [134]. Here also the second main difference appears, in that we consider an already given boundary value problem. In some transformations this boundary value problem was reduced to a boundary value problem with a parameter . - in a domain with smooth boundary, followed by application of the earlier results of M. S. Agranovich and M. I. Vishik. In this context some operator-function R('-) appears, and its poles prevent invertibility; iffor differential operators the function is a polynomial on A, then for pseudo differential operators this dependence on . - cannot be defined.
