Roughly, model-based diagnosis is the task of finding out the faulty components of a physical system based on the observed behavior and the system model. An active system is the abstraction of a physical artefact that is modeled as a network of com municating automata. For example, the protection apparatus of a power transmission network can be conveniently modeled as an active system, where breakers, protection devices, and lines are naturally described by finite state machines. The asynchronous occurrence of a short circuit on a line or a bus-bar causes the reaction of the protection devices, which aims to isolate the shorted line. This reaction can be faulty and several lines might be eventually isolated, rather than the shorted line only. The diagnostic problem to be solved is uncovering the faulty devices based the visible part of the reaction. Once the diagnosis task has been on accomplished, the produced results are exploited to fix the apparatus (and also to localize the short circuit, in this sample case). It is the eontinuation of the author's book [Rl], where elliptic boundary value problems have been studied in eomplete seales of spaees of generalized funetions. From the early sixties, in the works of Lions and Magenes [LiM] and Yu. Berezanskii, S. Krein and Va. Roitberg [BKR] the theorems on eomplete eolleetion of isomorphisms have been established. These theorems, roughly speaking, mean that the operator generated by an elliptie boundary value problem establishes an isomorphism between spaees of functions which 'have s derivatives' and spaees functions whieh 'have s - r derivatives' (here s is an arbitrary real number, r is the order of the elliptic problem). The dose results were also obtained by Seheehter [Sehe]. These results and some of their applieations are eontained in the book of Lions and Magenes [LiM2] (see also the survey of Magenes [MagD and Yu. Berezanskii [Ber]. Our intention was to provide a collection of exercises which cover only the easy part of ring theory, what we have named the 'Basics of Ring Theory'. This seems to be the part each student or beginner in ring theory (or even algebra) should know - but surely trying to solve as many of these exercises as possible independently. As difficult (or impossible) as this may seem, we have made every effort to avoid modules, lattices and field extensions in this collection and to remain in the ring area as much as possible. The present issue consists of contributions resulting from material presented and discussed in the group during the course of that year. The scope of the papers ranges from rather specialised issues arising from general relativity such as the problem of referential indeterminacy, to foundational questions regarding spacetime in the work of Carnap, Weyl and Hilbert. It is well known that the General Theory of Relativity (GTR) admits spacetime models which are 'exotic' in the sense that observers could travel into their own past. This poses a number of problems for the physical interpretation of GTR which are also relevant in the philosophy of spacetime. It is not enough to exclude these exotic models simply by stating that we live in a non-exotic universe, because it might be possible to 'operate time machines' by actively changing the topology of the future part of spacetime.
