Soft cover. Condizione: Fair. 1st Edition. New York: The Masses Publishing Company, 1917. The April, 1917 issue (Volume IX, Number 6, whole number 70). Quarto, illustrated stapled wraps, 42 pp.; this is a scarce survivor of the smaller-format issues (i.e., no longer folio size) which were issued late in the life The Masses. 1917… was the last year of publication, and by the time of this issue, there were only months left. Just Fair, due to the absence of the front cover and the separation of the first page from the remaining textblock with rear cover - all of which is itself in Very Good condition, by any periodical standard. As the very inexpensively-produced budget-of-the-heart icon The Masses was, it no doubt deserves its own grading standard, but there is none such. Some small scale chipping on page 3 and rear cover, modest toning to the remarkably healthy contents. See scans. Certainly one of the most seminal socio-political American publications of the last 200 years, The Masses was a collection of ideological art, opinion and reporting - usually contributed with little or no compensation - which strongly represented socialist / marxist values, but in a larger sense was representative of labor, women's rights, and radical left issues in general as those were at that time. Famous names of the era often contributed work, but the names of the regulars are themselves all now in history books. The now-timeless publication was officially shut down by the U.S. Government in 1918, ostensibly on the basis of postal regulations (though it had already suspended publication in late 1917), following two intense and ideologically-charged trials. Eastman and his sister, Crystal, then started The Liberator to carry on; after The Liberator closed its doors in 1926, The New Masses, under the primary leadership of Mike Gold, carried the radical flag. The Masses, as the first, is also the rarest. Text contributors to this issue of April, 1917 included Eastman, John Reed; Louise Bryant; Floyd Dell; Howard Brubaker; Robert Hillyer; Louis Untermeyer; Hutchins Hapgood; Ruza Wenclaw; Leslie Nelson Jennings; Robert H. Lowie; Charles W. Wood; Jane Whitaker; Anne Arnold; Henry Reich, Jr.; Dorothea Gay; Franklin Van Wert; David Rosenthal; Elizabeth Fox; and Nina Bull. Art was contributed by Arthur B. Davies; K.R. Chamberlain; Boardman Robinson; Arthur Young; Maurice Sterne; and Cornelia Barns. Check out all of these names. An extraordinarily rare piece of American publishing and political history. Please see scans. l-lng2. Arthur B. Davies; K.R. Chamberlain; Boardman Robinson; Arthur Young; Maurice Sterne; Cornelia Barns (illustratore).

Hardcover. Condizione: Very good condition. First edition. Folio. xv, 44pp., 25 plates. Original burgundy cloth with gilt lettering on spine. "The history of the group of papyri to which the texts published in this volume belong has been recounted so fully by Sir Alan Gardiner in his recent book "The Ramesseum Papyri" (1935), In…troduction, pp. I ff., that it needs no further description here. But it would, I think, be well to describe generally the present condition of these five papyri, since an account of the difficulties which they have presented may serve both to excuse some of the shortcomings of this work and to suggest ways of overcoming such difficulties when they are met with in other fragmentary papyri, Greek as well as Egyptian." (Introduction). Few in-text illustrations and twenty-five plates with papyri at rear. Contains appendix of the Verso Texts with commentary, indices of literary texts and the verso documents, followed by list of names of authors, books, and periodicals quoted in abbreviated form in the commentaries as well as abbreviations. Binding with very light wear along edges and minor blemishes. Dealer sticker on inside front cover.

Hardcover. Condizione: vg to near fine. Reprint. Elephant Folio. (6)pp., 10 plates, 33 (8)pp. Original green cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Frontispiece collotype. "The Ashmolean ostracon of the Story of Sinuhe has been more fortunate than some other important texts from Egypt in that its two halves, discovered or disposed…of separately, have been finally reunited. The lower half, which had been broken into several pieces and put together by the dealer from whom it was purchased, was presented to the Ashmolean Museum by [Sir] Alan Gardiner in 1940, after some work had already been done on it. Not long afterwards Professor J. Cerny, while in Egypt, recognized the upper half and secured it for the Museum, which purchased it with a subvention from [Sir] Alan Gardiner. The details of its original discovery are unknown, but it can safely be assumed to have come from Der-el-Medinah. It measures 31.5 cm in width by 88.5 cm in height, and is thus larger than the Cairo ostracon of sinuhe (Cat. 15216) known as C." (Preface). Illustrated with 10 plates in collotype, plus the frontispiece, followed by 33 pages of commentary. Contains conclusive text and index at rear. Binding with light wear along edges. Previous owner's name inked to inside front cover. Binding in overall very good, interior in near fine condition.

Illustrated with a number of lithographic plates. The first edition of British Egyptologist, papyrologist, Anglican priest, and academic John W. B…. Barns' translation of the Ashmolean's ostracon of the 'Story of Sinuhe'.This is Barn's translation of the limestone ostracon - a stone fragment - containing a narrative composed around 1875BC, and set in the aftermath of the reign of Amenemhat III.The foreword explains that the Ashmolean's artefact, possibly the largest ostracon in existence, is here translated by Barns in the hope that 'an annotated edition of this Nineteenth-Dynasty version of the story of Sinuhe will prove useful as a textbook for those studying Egyptian textual criticism'.With a frontispiece and ten plates of lithographs of the ostracon and transcriptions of their text. Collated, complete. These plates are followed by thirty-three pages of commentary, printed in facsimile of Barns' own hand. To the rear is a discussion of the conclusions drawn from the translation and commentary, followed by an index. With the inscription of 'George R. Riggs, 30.6.64' to the head of the front pastedown.A fascinating first edition of this Oxford University Professor of Egyptology's translation of what is often considered one of the finest works of ancient Egyptian literature, although debate is still ongoing as to whether the text is based upon actual events, or is entirely fictional.
