Beautiful coloured frontispiece and 7 colour plates by Carl Gehrts, red ruled frame to all text pages. S…pine lightly browned, neat English inscription dated January 1884 on front endpaper, contents clean, 2 inner joints cracked but binding tight and firm. A very good plus copy. A wonderful fairy tale about the love of two children brought up as brother and sister, the one captured by water sprites, the other by dwarves. After many years apart they are eventually reunited. Ein 3seitiger mit besonders reizvollen Illustrationen geschmückter Brief ist mit St. Gehrts" unterschrieben und datiert Bergedorf. d. 10ten Sptbr. 1873." Bei dem Schreiber handelt es sich hier vermutlich um…den jüngeren Bruder von Carl Gehrts, Johannes Gehrts (1855-1921), der ebenfalls Maler war und erst 1873 von Hamburg nach Weimar wechselte. Bergedorf liegt in der Nähe von Hamburg. Nach einem Besuch der Kunstgewerbeschule in Hamburg ging Gehrts 1871 nach Weimar und studierte an der Kunstschule bei K. Gussow (1843-1907) und A. Baur (1835-1906). Diesem folgte er 1876 nach Düsseldorf, 1889 ist eine Studienreise nach Italien und Griechenland belegt. Er war vielseitig begabt und in seiner dekorativen Manier den Zeitstil treffend, war er ein begehrter Künstler, der mit Aufträgen überhäuft wurde. Gehrts und Henseler hatten sich in Weimar an der 1871 gegründeten Kunstschule kennengelernt.
