(130 x 140 mm). 59, Ship laying for anchor. (170 x 123 mm) Exceedingly rare photo-album documenting the Danish vessel Tordenskjold?s mission in laying the very first telegraph cables in East Asia thereby connecting China and Japan to the global telegraph system. The album consists of photos taken aboard the vessel Tordenskjold, of Tordenskjold itself along with its crew, by an unknown photographer, and of photographs of the visited cities and surrounding areas by some of the finest photographers operating in East Asia at the time, such as John Thomson, William Floyd, Felice Beato and, in Egypt, Hippolyte Arnoux - all photographs presumably brought home by William Lund, Captain on board Tordenskjold. Through some of the earliest photos taken in China, Japan, and of the excavation of the Suez Canal, the present album depicts a pivotal moment in international relations and communications. Submarine telegraph cables were first brought to China by Danish magnate Carl Fredrick Tietgen (1829-1901), who in 1870 set up the Great Northern China and Japan Extension Company. The company was created to build and operate a telegraph cable connecting Hong Kong, Shanghai, and Japan, continuing on to Vladivostok on Russia's East coast. From Vladivostok, a cable ran along the Trans-Siberian Railway, linking Hong Kong to telegraph networks in Britain, Europe, and America. Tietgen fought off strong competition - primarily English-, and eventually won the concession to lay and operate new telegraph cables connecting Russia, China and Japan. Tietgen and his partners had embarked upon a grand and risky project. Undersea cables would need to be laid in waters that had not been sounded, cables were to be brought ashore on coasts where the prevailing conditions were not known, and it was.

None. Condizione: None. Seventy-five original albumen photos, including one large image ca. 26x36 cm (10x14 in), 57 photos from ca. 22,5x28,5 cm (8 ¾ x 11 ¼ in) to ca. 18x25 cm (7 ¼ x 9 ¾ in), 11 images from ca. 16x23 cm (6 ¼ x 9 in) to ca. 11x19,5 cm (4 ¼ x 7 ½ in), and six smaller photos ca. 5,5x9 cm (2 ¼ x 3 ½ in) or slightly smaller. Over fifty images with captions and/or numbers in negative; over forty with the photographers' credentials in negative; ca. twenty-five with period pencil captions on verso. Six images by Francis Frith mounted on period album leaves; all but one with his signatures in negative; four with later red pen captions on verso. Most photos slightly waved, minor creases or tears on extremities, several with remnants of old mounts on verso, one with two holes in the left upper corner, one with old repairs with tape on the margins, a few photos mildly faded, but overall a very good collection of interesting photos. Historically significant, extensive collection of seventy-five original albumen photos of Egypt and its people, taken by several prominent studios of the second half of the 19th century. The largest image is an early view of the Kiosk of Trajan (part of the Temple of Isis) on the island of Philae, looking north, with the Nile bank and a docked dahabiya on the right. Six early photos by Francis Frith (dating back to ca. 1857-1558), mounted on period album leaves, include three views of Cairo (a distant view of the Citadel and Muhammad Ali mosque taken from the Mokattam Hills, madrasa and mosque of Sultan Qaytbay, a street in the Old Cairo area), and three of the Near East - Baalbek temple complex (columns of the temple of Jupiter with the temple of Bacchus in the back), the north shore of the Dead Sea and Mount Horeb, Sinai. Over a dozen views of Cairo (including two early images by Wilhelm Hammerschidt) show the city with the Delta Barrage in the background, Citadel and Muhammad Ali mosque, Necropolis with the Citadel in the background, lion sculptures at the entrance to Qasr el Nil/El Gezira bridge, opening of the El-Gezira bridge for the water traffic, Gezira Palace, Ablution Fountain in the courtyard of Muhammad Ali mosque, interior of Sultan Barquq mosque, a street in old Cairo, garden in the courtyard of a hotel in Helwan, "village Com-el-Assuit," &c. Over a dozen views of Alexandria (mostly, by Luigi Fiorillo) show the city's harbour and port, general views, Pompey's Pillar, Cleopatra's Needle (moved to New York and installed in Central Park in 1881), the Hippodrome, abandoned palace of Said Pasha in the El Max neighbourhood, Muhammad Ali Square, Mahmudiyya Canal, and Ras El-Tin Palace. An early interesting photo depicts a street in Alexandria with trees on both sides and Pompey's Pillar in the background. Nine photos of the Pyramids of Giza include general and close-up views of the Pyramids and the Sphinx, featuring Arab villages, Nile channels, camel riders, a traveller in a horse-drawn cart, palm groves, Arab guides atop the Sphinx, &c. Fifteen views of the Suez Canal by Zangaki Brothers show Port Said (general views, Suez Canal Company's office, the Quay, the Lighthouse, Palais Hollandaise, Rue du Commerce, Eastern Exchange Hotel - including a rare photo when the terraces were not closed off with glass windows), Suez (new quay on reclaimed land/ "quai de terre plein", Port Tewfik), and several photos of steamers passing through the canal. There are also several portraits of Egyptians and Middle Eastern people ("Chech Arabe," a man wearing a turban, women wearing elaborate costumes, smoking "le nargile" (hookah), a boy with donkey, an adolescent girl, "Fille de Prince du Mt. Liban"), views of the fallen colossal statue of Ramses II near the ruins of Memphis in Bedrechen/Badrashim, an Arab village on the Nile, &c. Six smallest photos, evidently made to be sold as cartes-de-visite (but not yet mounted on card, which is a rare example), show the Pyramids of Giza, the Great Pyramid, Cairo Citadel and Muhammad Ali Mosque, dredges working on the excavation of the Suez Canal, and two portraits of Egyptian women with closed faces. Overall, an interesting, extensive collection of early original studio albumen photos of Egypt and its people in the second half of the 19th century.

Collection of 12 vintage photographs from the late 19th century showing China, Indonesia, the Hawaiian Islands, California and Egypt. Of the 4 photographs of China, 2 show Hong Kong, including one, possibly by the famous Chinese photographer Lai Fong (ca. 1839-1890), showing Queen's Road Central. The two rarest photographs show several of the 7500 imperial examination cubicles in Canton (Guangzhou), while a photograph by A Chan (Ya Zhen) shows the famous five-story pagoda on Kun Yam Hill in 1870. The Indonesian island Java can be seen on 3 photographs, including one of lake Telaga Warna by the British firm Woodbury & Page, based in Batavia (Jakarta). Taken further to the west, were 3 photographs of Hawaii, probably all taken in or near Honolulu. A rare undated photograph of the statue of King Kamehameha was taken probably right after the unveiling ceremony in 1883, as it shows a small wooden fence around the statue which can be seen in an illustration in The Graphic (28 April 1883) but is absent from all later images. Of the 2 final images, one by Isaiah West Taber (1830-1912) shows Midway Point in Monterey, California and the other, by Hippolyte Arnoux (fl. 1860-1890), a group of Arabs and camels waiting for the ferry near El Qantara in Egypt. Most of the photographs are worn at the edges, with small tears and folds and a few have small holes; one of the images of Hawaii with a waterstain at the lower margin. With 12 albumen prints, ranging in size from ca. 16.5 x 23 cm to 21 x 28 cm.

  • None. Condizione: None. Folio album ca. 31,3x26,3 cm. 29 card stock leaves. With 30 albumen photographs from ca. 21,9x28 cm (8 ½ x 11 in) to ca. 10,6x16 cm (4 ¼ x 6 in), including one double-spread photo ca. 27,5x39 cm (10 ¾ x 15 in). All photos with captions (in English) on the mounts; ca. 19 photos with captions (mostly in French) in negatives. Most photos dated. Period green cloth binding with leather spine. Spine worn and rubbed, front board slightly loose, occasional browning throughout, but overall a very good album with strong, interesting photos. Historically interesting collection of thirty early large-size photos of mostly Egypt (at the time Ottoman Egypt), taken by the famous photographers Hippolyte Arnoux and Zangaki Brothers in the 1890s. The Zangaki Brothers (likely C. and G. Zangaki) were Greek photographers active in Ottoman Egypt from the 1860s to the 1890s. They specialized in images of ancient monuments and daily life for the tourist market and occasionally collaborated with the French photographer Hippolyte Arnoux in Port Said. Together with Arnoux, the brothers were among the earliest commercial photographers to produce large-scale images of late 19th-century Egypt. The album opens with three excellent photos of post-bombardment Alexandria, showing the general view of the city, the barracks of the South Staffordshire Regiment, the Mosque of El-Megrib, and the Grand Square. Twelve well-executed photographs of Cairo mostly portray panoramic views of the city, the Niles, and ancient cites (Cairo Citadel, Qasr El Nil bridge filled with locals, road to the Pyramids, the Sphynx, Arab cemetery). Especially interesting is a lively, candid urban scene, illustrating the annual Procession of the Holy Carpet. The photograph shows hundreds of locals in traditional attire lining the streets as a large ornate box with the carpet passes by. Another interesting double-spread group photo features officers from the former 80th Regiment of Foot (later the South Staffordshire Regiment), stationed in Cairo in 1895 to help maintain order. Photos of Myanmar include general view of Mandalay, Shwenandaw Monastery, and a full-length studio portrait of a Burmese girl in traditional costume. The collection also includes three excellent aerial views of Morocco, showing Tangier and its main street. The rest of the photographs primarily depict Gibraltar (bull fight at the newly-built La Línea de la Concepción Bullring), Naples (aerial views of the city, Grand Hotel, Caracciolo St.), and Pompeii (Ruins of Pompeii). As follows from the captions in negatives, most photos of Italy were taken by the pioneer Italian photographer Achille Mauri (ca. 1806-1895). Overall, historically interesting collection of early large-size photos of Egypt, Myanmar, Morocco, Gibraltar, and Italy taken by the pioneer photographs of the region.

  • None. Condizione: None. Folio (ca. 37.5 x 28 cm or 14 ¾ x 11 in). 75 double paper leaves. 74 mounted albumen photographs from ca. 27.5 x 21 cm (10 ¾ x 8 ¼ in) to 25 x 14.5 cm (9 ¾ x 5 ½ in). 58 images captioned or signed in negative. Period black quarter sheep with dark olive cloth boards and marbled endpapers. Binding loosened, spine rubbed; front endpaper detached, several mounts with tears and minor losses not affecting images; ca. 12 images with minor tears or creases around edges, some photos mildly faded, but overall a very good album of in teresting photos. An interesting collection of 74 large albumen photographs showing Egypt, including Cairo, the Suez Canal, portraits of city locals, and ancient temple sites. Thirty photographs are signed by the Zangaki Brothers, ten are signed by Antonio Beato, and seven are signed by Hippolyte Arnoux. Over fifteen photographs show cities in Egypt. Many (over ten) are of Cairo, including views of the Muhammad Ali Mosque, the funerary complex of Sultan Qaytbay, Al-Azar Mosque, the Qasr el Nil Bridge, a Sufi lodge (Shahin al-Khalwati's khanqa) built into the side of a cliff in Mokattam, the "village de Guesirah" (possibly Gezira Island), and a general view of the city. Other cities shown include Luxor (a street scene), Alexandria (after the 1882 bombardment), and Tell el-Kebir (showing its cemetery). Over ten photographs are of the Suez Canal. Several show the construction of the canal and ships passing through. They also include views of Suez (as Port Tewfik), Port Said, and El Qantara ("avec la ponte," a floating ferry bridge). One photograph shows the Suez Company (1858-1997) offices in Ismailia Over twenty photographs are portraits and street scenes showing Egyptian people. They show merchants and grocers, an ox-drawn plough and farmers, sugarcane vendors, a litter being carried by two camels, men on a barque "à Jaffa," and a group of "sakas" by the Nile. They also include portraits of a Nubian family at their camp and two Nubian men on camels. There are also several photographs of ancient sites in Egypt, including the Pyramids of Giza, Karnak Temple, the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut, the Colossus of Rameses II in Memphis, and the Philae temple complex. Overall, a lively collection of photographs showing contemporary Egypt in the late 19th century.
