Johann Valentin Meidinger war Lehrer der französischen und italienischen Sprache zu Frankfurt/M. und hatte mit seinen im Selbstverlag herausgegebenen Sprachlehrbüchern unglaublichen… Erfolg: "Im Ganzen kann man den Absatz seiner sämmtlichen Grammatiken und Wörterbücher bis 1860 auf eine halbe Million Exemplare veranschlagen" (ADB). Dieser Erfolg zeitigte auch eine sprichwörtliche Redensart: Wie es "Kalauer" gab, gab es auch den "Meidinger", der eine allbekannte Anekdote bezeichnete, denn die bei Meidinger als Übersetzungsbeispiele angeführten Anekdoten wurden als bekannt vorausgesetzt.
