Aggiungi al carrelloLater Marbled Hardback. Condizione: Very Good - See Description. New Edition. 1793. New edition. [i], 250pp.; [i], iii, 238pp; [i], iii, 249pp.; [i], iii, 244pp. There is also a frontispiece illustration in volumes I-III but not in volume IV. 'The Adventurer' was an 18th century bi-weekly paper that was published between 1752 an…d 1754, and contributors included John Hawkesworth, Samuel Johnson and Joseph Warton. John Hawkesworth (c1715-1773) was an English writer and editor. In 1744 he succeeded Samuel Johnson as compiler of the parliamentary debates for the ''Gentleman's Magazine", andf from 1746 to 1749 he contributed poems signed Greville, of H Greville, to that journal. In company with Samule Johnson and others he started the periodocal called 'The Adventurer', which ran to 140 numbers, of which 70 were written by Hawkesowrth himself. The four volumes have been rebacked and recased in later marbled paper covered boards with gold titling on a leather label on the spine. This recasing is probably from the year 2000. The cases of the books are in very good condition. The contents are tight and clean apart from a few small marks and stains. The frontispieces and title pages have some foxing and soiling, mostly noticeable in volume 1. A name has been written on the top edge of the title page in all four volumes.

'Almost all the collections, however, th…at we have seen, are nearly altogether, if not wholly, composed of those effusions of genius which adorned an earlier period of the literary history of our country. It has, on this account, been the object of the Editors of the Constellation, almost exclusively; to confine this Selection to passages from more recent writers, and to give the young reader, for whose use it is chiefly intended, such specimens of eloquent or interesting extracts, as may be .calculated both to excite his attention, and to form, and improve his taste; while they exhibit our language in all the beauty and energy of which it is susceptible'. Not for children, this collection sports entries like 'Conclusion of Mr. Burke's Speech previous to the Election at Bristol in 1780' and 'Dr. Buchanan's visit to the inquisition at Goa'.
