Soft cover. Condizione: Collectible-Fine. Limited edition. One of 350 copies. Text is in English and French. Original publisher's beige wrappers. Deckle edge. 8 3/4" x 13 1/2." Eight unnumbered pages, complete. One color illustration, complete. Pages and covers are very clean and intact except for a slight bit of wrinkling. A Fine copy. Colophon in the back: "Three-hundred and fifty copies have been printed by Adrian Wilson with the assistance of Clifford Burke at the Press in Tuscany Alley, San Francisco, for presentation by Joseph M. Bransten and Adrian Wilson to the members of the Zamorano and Roxburghe Clubs at their joint meeting in Los Angeles in September 1974. The types are Cristal from Deberny & Peignot, Paris, and Van Dijck composed by Mackenzie & Harris, Inc. The papers are Tweedweave and Colophon text from the Butler Paper Company." This pamphlet contains a facsimile broadside that was originally published by Dembour & Gangel around 1850. The Introduction by Joseph M. Bransten and Adrian Wilson explains the provenance of the facsimile, "During 1973 an exhibition from the Department of Prints and Drawings at the Bibliotheque Nationale of Paris was held at the California Palace of the Legion of Honor in San Francisco. Joseph M. Bransten, a member of the Roxburghe Club, took particular delight in a colorful broadside titled Mine d'Or de la Californie which gave a distinctly French view of life and mining in this region in 1850. He conceived the idea that it might be reproduced, with a translation, for the 1974 joint meeting of the Roxburghe and Zamorano Clubs. He asked his fellow-Roxburgher Adrian Wilson if he would secure permission to reproduce it during the latter's research summer in Europe. . Joyce Lancaster Wilson translated it without any recognition of the strange faraway land it described. At home in Tuscany Alley she and Melissa Wilson added the coloring to the picture." The broadside describes some of California's geography, history, and its gold mines during the Gold Rush. The facsimile is followed by the English translation.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. In recent years, significant attention has focused upon the Islamic Republic of Iran's nuclear ambitions, and the threat they pose to the United States and the West. Far less well understood, however, has been the phenomenon of Iran's regional advance in America's own Hemisphere-an intrusion that has both foreign policy and national security implications for the United States and its allies. In this collection, noted specialists and regional experts examine the various facets of Iran's contemporary presence in Central and South America, and detail what the Islamic Republic's growing geopolitical footprint south of the U.S. border signifies, both for Iran and for the United States.…

Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. 2011 Palgrave hardcover edition. Ex library copy with stamps and labels else good condition. This new survey of scientific endeavor within the British Empire is the most wide-ranging yet published, examining the interconnections between science, the British Empire, and the emergence of a globalized world. It identifies and analyzes the web of scientific networks crisscrossing the British Empire through which scientific knowledge and authority were produced, circulated and legitimated, critically engaging with new ways of thinking about networked connections across space. The contributors offer a comparative perspective that surveys a variety of scientific initiatives and circuits, including networks of agronomists, anatomists, botanists, foresters, geologists, marine biologists, oceanographers and physicists. They chart the evolving practices, strategies, theoretical ideas and agendas among research scientists, technical advisers, imperial administrators, and native peoples in Africa, Australia, Britain, India and elsewhere; each chapter combines rigorous research with theoretical reflection based on the latest literature, as well as serving as a useful introduction to that literature. Contents: 1 'Science and Empire: An Overview of the Historical Scholarship' by Joseph M. Hodge, 2 'The Consolidation and Reconfiguration of 'British' Networks of Science, 1800-1970' by Brett M. Bennett, 3 'Science and the British Empire from its Beginnings to 1850' by John Gascoigne, 4 'A Network Approach to the Origins of Forestry Education in India, 1855-1885' by Brett M. Bennett, 5 'Anatomy of Reception: Science, Nation and Religion in Hindi-Language Print Media of Colonial South Asia' by Rajive Tiwari, 6 'A Science of Our Own': Nineteenth Century Exhibitions, Australians and the History of Science' by Peter H. Hoffenberg, 7 'Between the Nation and the World: J.T. Wilson and Scientific Networks in the Early Twentieth Century' by Tamson Pietsch, 8 'Albert Howard and the Decolonization of Science: From the Raj to Organic Farming' by Gregory A. Interior with minor yellowing on the first and last pages. The last page shows signs of have been bent. Bookseller sticker glued to the rear of the back cover top left side.; Catalogue from an exhibition presented by The Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong and The Urban Council, Hong Kong, January 26 to April 2, 1979, at the Hong Kong Museum of Art.; "The Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong first came into existence in 1974, and this is the third exhibition mounted in Hong Kong by the society and the second to be held in the Hong Kong Museum of Art. The exhibition on this occasion is devoted to Chinese and South-East Asian ceramics, mainly of the varieties used as trade wares in centuries past.Sir John Addis has honoured the society by writing the introduction to the Chinese ceramics section of the exhibition, which has been supplemented by essays on specific subjects by Dr Ip Yee, Dr Adrian Joseph, Dr Philip Wen-chee Mao and myself; and Roxanna M. Brown has generously consented to write the introduction to the South-East Asian wares section. Sir John's encouragement of the society from its beginnings has been most welcome, and we are particularly pleased that both he and Ms Brown should consent to write introductions in view of their well-known expertise in many of the types of ceramics included. Considerable advances have been made over the past ten years in our understanding of the types of wares exhibited as a result partly of excavations in many parts of South-East Asia and elsewhere notably of the shipwrecks off the coast of South Korea at Sinan and in the Gulf of Siam and partly from an intensive study of the wares themselves. Since the Manila Trade Pottery Seminar of 1968 numerous exhibitions of trade wares have been organized in many parts of the world, and a symposium was held recently at the Chinese University of Hong Kong during which provenances and dates were suggested for whole classes of early Sung ceramics, thus adding considerably to our knowledge of the wares of this early period. It is hoped that this exhibition will give new stimulus to interest in the subject and provide new collectors with a basic knowledge of the types of wares which can occasionally still be found today in the markets of South-East Asia. The diverse pieces being shown have been drawn almost without exception from Hong Kong collections and whilst the exhibition does not pretend to be comprehensive, examples are included of most of the main types of ceramic wares commonly traded in the Far East in the period prior to 1660." excerpt from the foreword by Brian S. McElney, President, The Oriental Ceramic Society of Hong Kong, September 1978.…

Soft cover. Condizione: Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. English text; Paperback; 20 x 25.5 cm; 0.376 Kg; 80 pages with black and white illustrations; Signs of wear in the back cover, front cover and spine. Mark on the cover, spine and back cover due to the removal of an old sticker. No highlighting or writing is text. Good readable copy.; Catalogue from the exhibition Chinese Pottery Burial Objects of the Sui and T'ang Dynasties with special reference to the scientific testing of pottery wares, and the works of the forger. Arranged in conjunction with the Research Laboratory for Archaeology, Oxford.; "When one thinks of T'ang ceramics it is not the wares which were in everyday life use during the period which spring to mind, but the prancing horses and camels, and the dancers and musicians, together with the exotic, partially glazed bowls, ewers and vases. These are the wares recovered from tombs when the railways ploughed their way across China. The point which has never been stressed strongly enough is that they were essentially burial objects and not items of everyday use. It is conjectural whether these vessels bore any relationship to the secular wares in use at the time-any more than did the animals, with their strikingly weird glazes and pigments, resemble their living counterparts. The wares of Yueh and Hsing, in use at the time, were much more suitable for household use by virtue of their shapes and impervious bodies (achieved by firing at high temperatures) than were the partially glazed burial obejcts. These burial wares do not form any sort of link with the wares of the Sung, which were to follow, as do the Yueh and Hsing pieces; and so the burial objects of the T'ang may perhaps be considered as an art form with less domestic and more ritual significance than is normally associated with ceramics. Because of this, far more emotive creativeness was entailed in their manufacture and these intense feelings are able to reach out over the centuries to excite a kind of appreciation today which is not aroused by any type of pottery. With this in mind, this exhibition has been assembled to attempt to crystallize and enhance the spiritual aura which surrounds its contents." excerpt from the introduction by Adrian M. Joseph and Hugh M. Moss, June, 1970.…

Hardcover. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: None, As Issued. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 210 pages. Published in 1973. Monograph on subject, presented as an Artist Book. One of the earliest and most beautiful books on the art and achievement of Chinese and Annamese ceramics ever published in the 20th century. Limited Edition of 1200 numbered copies. Published in this small and limited format as a Slipcased Edition only. The Limited Edition is now rare. An austerely elegant production by Hugh Moss: Oversize-volume format. Handsome brown cloth boards with gilt titles embossed on the spine, as issued. Photographs of ceramic art. Text by Joseph M. Adrian. Matching Slipcase with pictorial reproductions and gilt titles on the spine, as issued. The production values are outstanding in every respect. Without DJ, as issued. Presents "Chinese And Annamese Ceramics Found In The Philippines And Indonesia". An affirmation of the ground-breaking (literally) diggings conducted in the region that yielded these ceramic treasures. The ceramics from Chinese Dynasties as well as the ancient Annamese Kingdom (of present-day Vietnam), whose near-ethereal beauty is breathtaking and unsurpassed, is also tangible, archeological evidence of the major trades and exchanges that took place during the period, interrupted only by internal struggles within China and the ancient Annamese Kingdom. The only other book of comparable importance in and of itself is the late great Philippine National Artist Leandro (and wife Cecilia) Locsin's pioneering "Oriental Ceramics Found In The Philippines" (1967). Both volumes are valuable because they are pioneering and influential, preceding by decades in some cases, the plethora of books published in our time. An absolute "must-have" title for collectors of Chinese and Vietnamese ceramic art. This is a copy of the Slipcased Limited Numbered Edition, indicated as such on the Limitation Page. This title is a great art book, treasurable in its own right. This is one of very few copies of the Limited Edition still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. This is the single most beautiful copy we have ever seen. Please note: Inexplicably enough, the few remaining copies available online have very serious flaws ("Good", "Very Good") yet are sometimes priced at unheard-of prices (because the book is rare in any condition). This is surely an accessible and lovely alternative. A rare copy thus. Showcases 125 works of ceramic art. Lavishly illustrated with magnificent color plates. One of the most beautiful books on Asian ceramic traditions ever published in the 20th century. A fine collectible copy.
