Only a few years after the fire that destroyed the Teatro San Benedetto, a new opera house was built for the city of Venice under the architectural guidance of Giannantonio Selva. It opened on 17 May 1792 under the name La Fenice ~ the phoenix. Optimistic as the intention behind the name may have been, it was to bode ill for the Gran Teatro. In the night from 12 to 13 December 1836 the interior of the opera house was completely gutted by fire. In less than a year, La Fenice had risen from the ashes once again, to become a leading institution in the world of music for more than a century and a half Then, in 1996, during the night of 29 to 30 January, catastrophe struck and, within a short time, La Fenice once more was all but razed to the ground. This publication charts two centuries of musical history at the Gran Teatro La Fenice, from the great operas of the nineteenth century to contemporary music and modern dance, from Rossini and Verdi to Ligeti and Pina Bausch. It is the first complete chronicle of the operas, concerts and festivals held at the Gran Teatro, and also includes a detailed architectural history, with many illustrations, plans, sketches and period engravings. It pays homage not only to the past, but above also to the spirit of hope infusing the current reconstruction work on what is surely one of the world's most beautiful opera houses. …
