Das zentrale Element des Konzeptkünstlers Klaus Rinke stellt das Wasser und ein Experimentieren mit seinen Möglichkeiten dar. Der am 29. April 1939 in Wattenscheid/ Ruhr geborene Rinke absolvierte eine Lehre als Plakatmaler im Gelsenkirchener Westfalenkaufhaus (19541957); danach begann er, nach Abendkursen an der Folkwang Schule in Essen, dort auch sein Studium im Fachbereich Freie und Angewandte Malerei. Ein Aufenthalt in Griechenland 1959/60 führt ihn zu ersten Fotoarbeiten im Body-Art-Bereich, zu Aufnahmen seines eigenen Körpers. Sein Interesse am Wasser als Medium für Darstellung von Zeit und Schwerkraft begann schon zu dieser Zeit neben verschiedenen Formen der Selbstdarstellung, mit denen sich Klaus Rinke befaßte. Sein erstes Atelier bezieht er 1962 in Reims (Frankreich), siedelt jedoch Mitte der 60er Jahre nach Düsseldorf um. Der zentrale Aspekt für den Künstler heißt: 'Ich mache keine toten Dinge, sie sind immer gedacht als Interpretation von etwas Humanem, von realen Vorstellungen, die allein durch mich als Dolmetscher vorgebracht werden.' Hier zeigt sich Joseph Beuys Einfluß, mit seinem Engagement für humanistische Ideale und die anthropologische Komponente seiner Kunst, auf Rinke, der ab 1974 ebenfalls an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf lehrt. Von 19791983 hält sich der Künstler mehrfach monatelang in Australien auf, und es entstehen dort Graphitzeichnungen mit dem Titel 'Präembryonales Tagebuch', anknüpfend an seine frühen Arbeiten. Ein Atelier, daß er sich seit 1981 in Los Angeles eingerichtet hat, führt zu ständigen mehrmonatigen Aufenthalten in Kalifornien. 1984 findet er dort zur Malerei zurück. Klaus Rinke lebt und arbeitet in Haan (bei Düsseldorf) und Los Angeles. Mit der Rezeption Rinkes beschäftigt sich nun das von der Kunsthistorikerin Ursula Eisenbach herausgegebene Buch, das Dokumente aus der Anfangszeit des Künstlers als Folkwang-Schüler in Essen bis heute vereint und durch ausgewählte Zeichnungen Rinkes angereichert wird. Dabei beleuchten Rezensionen den künstlerischen Wert seines Werks, während Interviews und Texte von Freunden einen sehr persönlichen Einblick in Schaffen und Inspiration des Künstlers gewähren. Das Buch erscheint anläßlich der Ausstellung 'Gedacht Gemacht', die vom 3. 10. 2004 bis 21. 11. 2004 im Kunstbund Museumsverein Wuppertal sowie dem dortigen Von der Heydt-Museum zu sehen ist.
