Un…dated c1880. At front is remains of blank end page with an 1890 gift inscription (pasted on newer endpaper). Looks like about 50 years ago some one has rebound this book, repairing and using the original front cover, with a new rear cover and new endpages. This is a curious edition, as seems first published undated in 1880, but was unable to find another edition listed, yet this has a different cover than the other copies found on the net. So not sure if this was published before or after the decorative binding (exactly same Title page) so it is likely published at the same time, this being the average binding/edition and the decorative binding being the more expensive de luxe binding/edition. Size: 24.5 x 28.75cm Approx.

Disaster strikes a military band in this farcical print pulled from "Military Misreadings of Shakespere", a humorous color plate book published around 1880, the conceit of which was to apply quotations from Shakespeare to some aspect of military life but to do so with an outrageous misreadin…g of the quote's intended meaning. The quoatation applied here comes from Hamlet, Act I, and is "His Liberty is a threat to all." As far as the illustration here goes, one need not know the source to find the image amusing in an over-the-top slapstick way. And although the print is extracted from a book, one wouldn't know it just by looking at it. It comes close to passing as a watercolor, and one sees none of the usual indications that it was a page from a book. Visible, 16.6 by 20.5 cm. With frame and matting, 38 by 40.5 cm. The frame and matting are particularly attractive and we can't imagine anyone wouldn't want to retain them. Indeed, they are important in making an appealing decorative object. The print does have some light foxing, yet that issue doesn't significantly mar our enjoyment of the print.
