VII. 2010, sonst sehr guter Zustand, Leseseiten sind sehr sauber und ohne Markierungen. --- In den Jahren 1529-1531 verfasste der St. Galler Humanist, Reformator und Politiker Vadian eine Geschichte von Abtei und Stadt St. Gallen im Hoch- und Spätmittelalter (1199-1491). Im Blick hatte er den Wandel der Klosterstadt zu einer im Leinwandgewerbe zu Reichtum gekommenen, selbstbewussten Reichsstadt im Verlauf von rund 300 Jahren. Am Anfang seiner Darstellung steht das Kloster in seinen reichsweiten Bezügen völlig im Vordergrund. Zu Ende des 14. Jahrhunderts tritt dann die Stadt vermehrt in Erscheinung, und in der zweiten Hälfte des 15. Jahrhunderts spielt sich ein Duell ab zwischen der wirtschaftsmächtigen Stadt und dem Kloster, das unter der Führung des umtriebigen Abts Ulrich Rösch aus einer klösterlichen Grundherrschaft in einen frühneuzeitlichen Fürstenstaat umgebaut wird. Es gelingt der Stadt nur ansatzweise, sich zu emanzipieren, und im sogenannten Rorschacher Klosterbruch, einem Gewaltakt gegen die Klosterherrschaft, erleidet sie eine schmerzhafte Zurücksetzung. 1529, da ein Durchbruch im Gefolge der Reformation nun doch noch möglich scheint (die Stadt besetzte das stillgelegte Kloster und erwarb es schliesslich durch Kauf), hat Vadian seine Abtei- und Stadtgeschichte unter hochgespannten Erwartungen begonnen. 1531, nach der Niederlage der Reformation im zweiten eidgenössischen Konfessionskrieg, der für St. Gallen einschneidende Folgen zeitigte (das Kloster und die Klosterherrschaft wurden vollumfänglich wiederhergestellt), schloss er sein Werk unter Weglassung der Teile von vor 1191 sowie des Schlussteils nach 1491 entmutigt ab. In den 1540er Jahren hat er die Abtei- und Stadtgeschichte als Beitrag zu Johannes Stumpfs Schweizerchronik in zurückhaltenderer Form und unter Konzentration auf den lokalen Bereich neu angepackt und vollumfänglich (720-1530) dargestellt.Die Neuedition bringt eine buchstabengetreue Transkription von Ms. 43 der Vadianischen Sammlung samt Kommentar, in dem Vadians Quellen nachgewiesen werden. In einer Einleitung werden die Umstände der Entstehung, die Geschichtsauffassung und die Arbeitsweise des Autors erörtert sowie das Nachleben seines Werks. AD 45) was born hard by the Strait of Gibraltar; it is no accident that as a resident of the end of the known world, he was the first Roman geographer whose work survives. Joachim Vadianus (van Watt, 1484-1551) here edits for the first time Pomponius Mela's De orbis situ libri tres. Coelestinus II Steiglehner OSB (1738-1819), was the last prince-abbot of St. Emmeram's Abbey in Regensburg. Thereafter the volume came into the possession of the greatest Hungarian bibliophile of the early XIX, Miklós Jankovich (1772-1846), whose library was sold under financial necessity to the Hungarian Parliament, bringing it -- along with antiquities and art -- into the library of the Hungarian National Museum (Magyar Nemzeti Múzeum). Buch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Die Kleinere Chronik der Äbte von St. Gallen ist das Kernstück im historiographischen Werk des St. Galler Humanisten und Politikers Joachim von Watt, genannt Vadian. Im Frühjahr 1545 bat der Zürcher Geschichtsschreiber Johannes Stumpf den St. Galler Gelehrten Vadian um Mitarbeit an einer umfassenden Schweizerchronik. Dieser sagte zu und verfasste in kurzer Zeit eine Chronik des Klosters und der Stadt St. Gallen sowie grundlegende Abhandlungen zum historischen und geographischen Umfeld. Die Kleinere Chronik der Äbte entstand 15 Jahre nach der Grösseren Chronik. Sie unterscheiden sich in verschiedener Hinsicht. Während sich die Grössere Chronik auf die Zeit von 1200 bis 1491 beschränkt, beginnt die Kleinere Chronik mit einer völlig neu erarbeiteten Geschichte von 720 bis 1200 und schliesst mit einer Skizze der Ereignisse von 1491 bis 1532. In der Grösseren Chronik ging es Vadian vor allem um die Rechtfertigung der Verselbständigung der Stadt gegenüber dem Kloster; er ergriff bewusst Partei und wurde nicht selten polemisch. In der Kleineren Chronik dagegen schrieb er eine Kloster- und Stadtgeschichte als Beitrag zu einer umfassenden Schweizerchronik, die sich an eine eidgenössische Leserschaft über die konfessionellen Grenzen hinweg richtete. In der Größeren Chronik befasste sich Vadian auch mit der eidgenössischen und der abendländischen Geschichte. In der Kleineren Chronik hingegen konzentrierte er sich auf das Kloster und die Stadt St. Gallen.Grundlegend neu ist die Darstellung der Frühgeschichte. Vadian legt darin in deutscher Sprache vor, was er bereits 1537 in einer lateinischen Abhandlung mit dem Titel «Farrago antiquitatum de collegiis et monasteriis Germaniae veteribus» in bahnbrechender Weise erarbeitet hatte: eine auf die früh- und hochmittelalterlichen Urkunden des Klosterarchivs abgestützte quellenkritische Untersuchung der St. Gallischen Frühzeit. Diese zukunftsweisende Geschichtsforschung beinhaltete die Beachtung der Geographie als notwendige Voraussetzung für das Verständnis der Geschichte und den Wandel als Wesenszug des Geschichtsverlaufs.
