Aggiungi al carrelloSoft cover. Condizione: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This vintage, large 8vo pulp magazine is intact, complete, "good-plus." would grade higher save for two small holes to top left of front wrap near the letter "f" -- they don't penetrate into the text block, but look almost as though someone contemplated punching holes for mou…nting or storage in a binder. Marvelous color cover illustration credited to BOTH H.W. McCauley and J. Allen St. John, which is unusual. This issue also includes Robert Leslie Bellem's "Robots Can't Lie" and William P. McGivern's "Doorway of Vanishing Men." Calling Burroughs' 36-page story "Goddess of Fire" a "novel" is a bit of a stretch -- in fact it's the second of four interlinking stories (following "Slaves of the Fish Men", preceding "The Living Dead" and "War on Venus" -- published sequentially in Fantastic Adventures 1941-42, later fixed up into the Carson Napier science fiction / fantasy novel "Escape on Venus" (1946.) Reduced from $36. Cover credited to H.W. McCauley and J. Allen St. John / Interior B&W illustrations by J. Allen St. John (illustratore).

Penned price (4/-) & second-hand book seller's stamps to inside front page:- Synopsis: Ulysses Paxton, U.S.A., awakened from a battlefield in France to find h…imself the prisoner of the strangest super-scientist of a strange planet. Paxton, it seemed, was valuable to that master mind as an apprentice because he would have no loyalties to interfere with the work he was called to do. For Ras Thavas' weird experiments involved transplanting the brains of ape and man, and of beauty and hag. But Paxton was an Earthman similar to John Carter, the Warlord of Barsoom, and Paxton realized that he had to undo the evil he had helped to create. The story of Paxton's fight to right the wrong done to a lovely woman is a Burroughs Mars novel that ranks with the best:- (original cost $0.40). Aggiungi al carrelloEdition of 1500 copies. Cloth, 8vo, 26 cm, xxiv, 561, [1] pp, ills (some colour) Over 5,000 entries. This is the first volume of the splendid 2-volume bibliographical catalogue describing the superb Osborne Collection of Early Children's Books.Generally the cut-off date is 1910, but books published after that date by authors who… were well-launched before then are included. The great majority of the books described were published originally in England although some original editions of books adopted by English-speaking children (eg Le Avventure di Pinocchio, 1883,) are included. The set is well-illustrated with xx pages of colour plates, xx pages of black-and-white plates, and xx line illustrations in the text. There is an interesting 10 page introduction by Edgar Osborne describing the genesis of his collection and something of the paths he followed in building it up with his wife over a period of 40 years. Books are catalogued alphabetically within sections based on the reading interests of children as follows: Aesop and other fabulists; Myths and legendary heroes; Nursery stories and fairy tales; Poetry, verses, and rhymes; Nursery rhymes and alphabets; Books of instruction; The Bible and books of religious instruction; Biography and history; Travel and geography; Natural Science; Games and pastimes; Stories - before 1850; Stories - 1850 and after; Periodicals and annuals; Keepsakes and miscellanies; Penny dreadfuls; Movable and toy books; Almanacs and birthday books. In addition to quite detailed bibliographic descriptions, most entries are annotated with a comment on the publication history, illustrations, advertisements or other matters of interest. Title-pages are transcribed in full (save for quotations, degreees of authors, titles of previous books (except for anonymous and pseudonymous works), prices, and specific addresses of publishers and printers). There are useful appendixes of: 1 Chronological list of editions before 1800 (both volumes); 2 List of illustrators and engravers (Volume 1); 3 List of publishers, booksellers and printers (Volume 2) ; and the general index includes authors, titles, translators, editors and series. This is a fascinating and essential reference for anyone interested in early children's books. Covers slightly rubbed, spine slightly marked, contents agetoned, otherwise Good.

Carneal, a graduate of Princeton University and the University of Virginia School of Law, began his law career in Richmond in 1963. After twenty-two years of private practice, Carneal left the firm of Cabell, Moncure & Carneal, Inc., in 1985 when he was appointed to the position of Richmond city attorney. In 1989, he joined Owens & Minor, Inc., a medical supply distribution firm, where he serves as senor vice president, general counsel, and corporate secretary. Carneal's interest in the history of the Fan District began many years ago when he discovered that a long-vacated byway called the Scuffletown Road ran through the middle of a vacant lot he had purchased on Park Avenue. Curiosity about the road and about the location and nature of Scuffletown led to research at the local courthouses and in archives that then expanded into a leisurely exploration into the history of the entire Fan District. Carneal has served as president of the Fan District Association, trustee of Historic Richmond Foundation, and director of the Historic Monument Avenue and Fan District Foundation, the Maymont Foundation, and the Massey Cancer Center. He presently is a member of the Commission of Architectural Review of the city of Richmond. Carneal is married to Ann Wood Carneal and has two grown children, Jack, a writer, and Ann Barron, a teacher. Drew and Ann Carneal live on Monument Avenue." - from the inner front jacket flap. Cheek, Richard (color photography); Zehmer, John G. (photography) (illustratore).
